K. Joly Decks Are Designed For Entertaining
Almost all decks in Ottawa are built using pressure-treated lumber as the framework. There are three main types of material Ottawa deck builders can use to build local decks.
Wood Decks in Ottawa
Wood decks range from the most economical all the way up to the most expensive material type that can be used to build a deck. The vast majority of decks in Ottawa are pressure-treated wood. It is cost-effective, low maintenance and durable. It does not need to be stained and will age to a grey colour. Some cracking and splitting may be visible. Cedar decks are typically as durable as a pressure-treated deck but the deck boards may rot a little quicker. The look of cedar is a little prettier than pressure-treated so cedar is often an upgrade of choice for customers that want something a bit prettier than pressure-treated but still cost-effective. Ipe also called Brazilian walnut, is a beautiful exotic wood from South America. Ipe wood structures are hard, strong, and naturally resistant to rot, abrasion, weather, and insects. It is almost twice as dense as most woods and up to five times harder. It is a very expensive material option and is quoted to us by our supplier on a job by job basis.
Composite Decks in Ottawa
Composite decks are built using material that is a manufactured blend of wood and plastic. It offers the durability and look of a wood deck while benefiting from the maintenance-free longevity of plastic. Generally composite decks are approximately three times the cost of a wood deck. PVC Decks in Ottawa
PVC decks are built using polyvinyl chloride and do not contain wood except for the framing structure. PVC decks come in a variety of colours and options. PVC decks are usually built with a system that directs rain water into channels and to the outside of the deck making the underside of the deck waterproof. Deck Construction in Ottawa
There are three main types of deck foundations in Ottawa that meet the Building Code.
Deck Blocks
This is the cheapest option. The deck is considered a “floating deck” and will move with the frost. However, once the frost is gone the deck returns to its original position. A deck on deck blocks cannot be attached to a house.
Helical Piles
Helical piles are screw piles that are mechanically screwed into the ground and typically reach a depth of around 5.5 feet. A frost sleeve is installed on pile to even further prevent frost heave. They don’t require excavation or cement making them the ideal choice for a deck that will be attached to a house or structure.
Cement Footings
A 10 inch sono tube filled with concrete sits on a 24 inch by 24 inch footing. The footing is placed below the frost line (5 foot 2 inches in Ottawa). This option is labour-intensive and messy. Cement footings are typically reserved for areas that are already excavated such as a brand new build. Otherwise, helical piles have almost made concrete footings obsolete!
